The explosive growth in photography book publishing has presented photo-eye with an interesting challenge along with what we think is an exciting opportunity.
How can we continue to offer an ever-increasing inventory of photography books, keep those books continuously in stock and compete with the online deep discounters on price and shipping? The answer is that we can shift much our fullfillment to the web's most efficient book operation, Amazon.com.
Now we are happy to offer you Amazon's discounts on books which are almost always in stock from either Amazon directly or Amazon Marketplace. We can also provide you with the same shipping options that Amazon provides, including on qualified orders, free shipping.
It's important to understand that you will still be supporting photo-eye if you order from Amazon or Amazon Marketplace through photoeye.com. We make it easy for you to do this by providing a dual shopping cart system with separate checkouts.
However, you may still opt to purchase a particular title from photo-eye directly even though the same book is available through Amazon at a less expensive price.
Book publishing is not a perfect industry. Though all books are imperfect in some subtle way, we want to be as accurate as possible on our website if we know that there is a problem with a particular book. Imperfections range from a rubbed dustjacket, a small tear in the dustjacket, or a corner of the book being bumped. No fundamental flaw should be part of an imperfect book's condition. E-mail us our call 505.988.5152 should you have questions prior to ordering a particular imperfect book.
Place your order now and we'll send you the item when it arrives.
You will not be charged until your order ships.
An additional change will be added to the standard handling charge for this item as it is a foreign publication and shipping expenses from foreign countries is extremely expensive or it requires a larger, more expensive box or it requires extra care in handling. Thank you for understanding!
Walker Evans was perhaps the greatest documentary artist America has ever known. In a career that lasted forty-six years (1928-1974) Evans profoundly even radically-changed the way Americans looked at themselves, their social causes, and their country. Drawn from a largely unseen private collection-the largest private collection of Walker Evans photographs in the world-this lavishly produced volume presents scores of pictures that have heretofore been inaccessible to the public.
Included are the familiar images of Evans's southern work (1935-36), as well as far less familiar images of Evans's friends and fellow artists; his work in Tahiti; photographs that he made of Victorian house architecture (1930-31); and photographs done on travels to England, Cuba, Maine, Nova Scotia, Chicago, and New Orleans. Importantly, Evans prefigured the work of photographers as diverse as Dorothea Lange, Harry Callahan, Robert Frank, and Garry Winogrand- as well as two generations of American documentary photographers. The "lost" photographs of Walker Evans, perhaps the most important figure in twentieth- century photography, are seen here for the first time.
Authors Belinda Rathbone and Clark Worswick have written lively texts delineating the overlooked byways of Evans's career at a moment when a rediscovery of his life's work is taking place in both the museum world and in the world of photographic collecting.
Belinda Rathbone is a photography historian who has written widely on modern photographers.
Recognized as one of the top fifteen photography books of 2000 by the Village Voice.
"The Lost Work is a wonderfully rare thing: a glimpse of the 'outtakes' of Evans' life. This melange of public and private reveals how Evans loved anonymity and found it behind the camera, spying on his own life. In looking at these, we too become spies, for this collection is, ultimately, personal effects."

Reproducing some of the most stunning and rarest of Evans work, almost all previously unpublished, this lavishly produced volume brings to light scores of images from an artist who has been labelled "the great artist of our time."--Vanity Fair. Some of the rarities included are from work Evans did in Cuba, Tahiti, Maine, Chicago, England, and Nova Scotia.
