In Changing Paris, Philip Trager traverses "the City of Light" along the course of the Seine, documenting the remarkable structures and spaces of this magnificent city, which has so often used the river as a point of reference in its architectural planning. Trager's luminous photographs reference the nineteenth-century works of forebears Edouard Baldus, Henri Le Secq, Gustave Le Gray, and Eugene Atget, whose architectural photographs reflect both the transformations and the timelessness of Paris.

Among the structures and sites that Philip Trager photographs are the Grands Projets (including the new Bibliotheque Nationale de France Francois Mitterrand, Opera Bastille, Grande Arche de la Defense, and I. M. Pei's monumental glass pyramid additions to the Louvre), as well as the Place de la Concorde, Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Tour Eiffel, Musee d'Orsay, beautiful gardens, and the magnificent bridges that span the Seine. Trager captures the spirit of the places he photographs with a profound mastery of light and a unique, contemporary vision. At the same time, Changing Paris is an important document of Paris in the 1990s, with insightful essays by Pierre Borhan and Diane Johnson and informative commentary by Thomas Mellins on the architectural history and significance of these structures.

Philip Trager has received international critical acclaim for his photography, particularly within the genre of architectural photography. His previous books include Echoes of Silence (1972), Photographs of Architecture (1977), Philip Trager: New York (1980), The Villas of Palladio (1986), Dancers (1992), and Persephone (1996). Trager's work is included in numerous museum collections including the Bibliotheque Nationale, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Center for Creative Photography, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.
