Sara J. Winston’s Foibles and Avoidance is a perceptive, questioning book consisting of individual cards in a shortened manila folder wrapped by a belly band. Sara’s book presupposes the loss of her father and openly, the fear of his death (which indeed did take place after the printing of this book). Sara has saved the crossword puzzles her father did over the years. Each card has an image of home, family, and a crossword puzzle clue written under the image, revealing our reliance on captions and thus questioning our communications, or lack thereof, with one another. Enhanced by the rough riso printing, this book is an object for contemplation.
Terri Weifenbach lives and works in Burgundy, France. After her first book, In Your Dreams, was published by Nazraeli Press in 1997, she has authored more than twenty books. Terri’s most recent book, Cloud Physics (2021), is published by The Ice Plant, USA, and Atelier EXB, Paris, France. She has exhibited in the US, Europe, Japan, and Korea and received the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2015.
