Rixon Reed's Favorite Books of 2024

In Place — Fazal Sheikh.   Self-Published.

Beautifully seen aerial photographs of Bears Ears and other protected native lands, which are once again endangered and subject to the whims of the Trump administration. This small (5-3/4x7-1/4”), exquisitely printed, pigment-ink book, with its fore-edge pages inked in a dark umber color, was designed by Fazal Sheikh in collaboration with Duncan Whyte. It is a breathtaking experience to hold in your hands and a beautiful companion to Sheikh’s Thirst, both printed by Trifolio in Verona, Italy.

Rixon Reed is the founder and director of photo-eye. He was seduced by the power of photobooks upon first seeing Larry Clark's Tulsa in 1973 while visiting a tiny Cooper Union bookstore in New York City. He later managed the Witkin Gallery book department before founding photo-eye in 1979 in Austin, Texas, as a mail-order photography book business. He moved photo-eye to Santa Fe in 1991, where it remains today as a bricks-and-mortar bookstore, gallery, and internet business.
