Moral Minority — Sergio Purtell. Published by STANLEY/BARKER.
I’ve chosen three books that intrigue but don’t overwhelm me. I craved modesty this year and that need has persisted in these troubled, ego-driven days.
Sergio Purtell is finally having his day in print, and I’m gratified that his eloquent voice is receiving its due attention. This year’s volume from Stanley/Barker, following his earlier book Love’s Labour, sings a poignant, graceful tune. His work doesn’t scream for attention or writhe with self-aggrandizement. I would say there’s something European about it, but Purtell is Chilean by birth. Moral Minority, featuring photographs made between 1977 and 1999, is Sergio’s fond, wary embrace of his adopted North American home.
