White Fence — Graciela Iturbide. Published by RM.
White Fence expands on a 1986 photo commission shot by Iturbide in the LA neighborhood of Boyle Heights. The newly fleshed out series portrays chosen families in the deaf Chicano community with warmth and intimacy. The photos are nice, but it’s the design which pushes White Fence into exceptional territory. Silver accents and letterpress texts blend with gang signs and ASL words inside a spacious layout, deftly sliced into two volumes in a slipcase cover. My sign language verdict: two thumbs up.
