My third favorite book is also in black-and-white: Lake Erie (Kehrer) by my old darkroom mate Lynn Whitney. Using an 8x10 view camera, she captures quiet, gentle moments of people and scenes along Ohio’s lake shores. Nicholas Nixon offers an eloquent text: “Deceptively simple, her pictures suggest without naming complex underlying emotions: grief, loneliness, weariness, remembrance, a bit of warmth. There is also determination, endurance, and resilience.”
Mark Steinmetz lives in Athens, Georgia with his wife Irina Rozovsky. They have a book together that was published this fall — Insieme(Chose Commune) — photographs made in Italy. Due out in January is Steinmetz’s France 1987 (Nazraeli Press).
