As someone who has devoted their life making photographs, its easy to feel jealous of the critic who all of a sudden wins photo book awards, but Vince Aletti’s The Drawer offers so many layers of content to dissect, in such an effortless manner, that I’ts hard to resist its allure. More importantly, you get the voyeuristic pleasure of peeking into the personal space of a public figure. The critic is exposed (if only to a certain degree). On top of that, the book is filled with the nostalgia, humanity, and sensuality of recent photo history.
Carolyn Drake is an artist and photographer based in Vallejo, California. Her work has been supported by a Guggenheim fellowship, Lightwork, and the Henri Cartier Bresson Foundation, among other awards. She has authored five photo books, is a member of Magnum Photos, and is represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery.
