Since Masahisa Fukase’s death in 2012 we’ve seen a glut of posthumous titles, reprints, and retrospectives. Private Scenes zeroes in on the man himself, as viewed from arm’s length. Silver gelatins from his final two exhibitions tuck Fukase’s various body parts in the rearview corner, leaving most of the frames open for street life, friends, pets, and colorfully exuberant overpaintings.
