Anne Wilkes Tucker's Favorite Books of 2023

Coming and Going — Jim Goldberg.   Published by MACK Books.

From his first project Rich and Poor, Jim Goldberg established a signature style — photographing chosen subjects and soliciting hand-written texts from each person. His subsequent books became increasingly intense as he collected portraits of subjects he met once or many times, often adding their text, collaging pictures. For this biographical book, he has gathered images of himself, friends, animals, and family portraying degrees of intense connections and fragmented lives. Having admired his work for 50 years, I’ve always been drawn most to his capacity for empathy while keeping a critical eye on humanity.

Anne Tucker served as founding curator of Museum of Fine Arts Houston photography department from 1976 to 2015. She curated over 40 exhibitions, most with catalogs and built a collection of over 30,000 photographs which were made on all seven continents.
