If you weren't expecting to see this book on our list, you haven't been paying attention. Baldwin Lee is long overdue for a book like this; a sustained view on his corpus. His work is iconic, profound, heartwarming, gut-wrenching, soul-preserving and very much of this social moment of inequality, reexamination and hope. A student of Walker Evans, Baldwin Lee is nothing short of a master photographer and this self-titled monograph is more than ample evidence of it. Beautifully printed by Hunter Point Press, this gem is now out-of-print, but only for the moment; the second printing is due in early 2023. If you missed it the first time around, don't repeat that mistake.
