Shiotani by Anders Edstrom. Published by AKPE.
There are very few artists working with lens-based media who have the unique and singular vision of Anders Edstrom. His influence across contemporary fashion photography, the book form and documentary film-making has been immense, and yet he is barely known and rarely cited. This self-published 700-page volume has absolutely none of the supposed prerequisites for a ‘great’ photobook and it manages much more than most get anywhere near achieving. The photographs were made between 1993 and 2015 and the book amounts to both a memoir and a veritable account of life in a rural community in the Shiotani valley of northern Japan.
