Alys Tomlinson’s Favorite Book from 2021

Portraits 1910–32 by John Alinder.   Published by Dewi Lewis.

This book is a real gem. I’m very happy to have discovered the tender images of Swedish photographer Alinder, who was previously unknown to me. With echoes of August Sander and Mike Disfarmer, the black-and-white portraits reveal Alinder’s personal view of his community, friends and neighbours. It’s a gentle book that gives you a sense of the warmth and connection Alinder had with those around him.

Alys Tomlinson is a photographer based in London, UK.
