Rachel Barker’s Favorite Book from 2020

Small Town Portraits by Dennis Dinneen.   Published by murmur books.

A book to be truly excited about. Forget the stuff that doesn't matter, the instagrammability, the 'popularity' and just look at some honest and good photographs. Dennis Dinneen's images restore my faith in photography, and what it should be. Dinneen set up a makeshift photographic studio in a backroom of his pub in Macroom, County Cork, Ireland. The result is a record of Macroom's community from the 50's - 70's, capturing everything from family portraits, Communions, Weddings and even passports and driving licences. The images have a rare authenticity that when you find it in photography is truly special.

Honorable Mentions:
The Eye of War: Ukraine 1941/42 by Dieter Keller
Midnight La Frontera by Ken Light
