Douglas Stockdale's favorite book from 2018

Although this photobook has as the author Laia Abril, the principal photographer, the reason that this photobook has impressed me is due in great part to its conceptual design, a collaboration by Abril’s long-time partnership with the Spanish book designer Ramon Pez. As a book object, the design and subsequent production attributes are critical. To summarize; Abril and Pez have not shied from this thorny inter-continental and multilayered cultural, political and religious land-mine like the subject of Abortion. They provide ample evidence of how over the years many women have suffered extensively due to their reproductive capabilities. The book design reinforces the internal narrative as if to state; nothing is very easy or as straightforward as it might first appear. An absolutely brilliant photobook.

Douglas Stockdale's favorite book from 2018

Rarely does a long-term photo-documentary project result in a photo book that has an immediate impact on its ability to clearly illustrate an on-going health risk to our global society. Many social documentaries have either a direct or implied call-to-action, whose impact is hard to discern. Palu’s book has a visual immediacy that combines science, medicine, and personal situations to clearly illustrate the personal safety and risks prevalent today. The pervasive use of Asbestos in manufacturing for many years has placed each of us is in peril and we need to understand the long-term implications of this dangerous material, and Palu’s book is one of the most effective books that I have witnesses to bring this message home.
