Blake Andrews's favorite book from 2018

Deana Lawson's debut monograph hit me like a ton of bricks. At first glance these domestic scenes seem be documentary. Instead they're carefully choreographed by Lawson to explore issues of race, class, and the consensual aspect of portraiture. This book scrambled many of my preconceptions with a series as bizarre as it is original. Packaged beautifully by Aperture in a large volume with reproductions approaching exhibition quality.

Gregory Halpern's Omaha Sketchbook is a sharp meditation on the American heartland, an homage to color contact sheets, and a bit of revisionist photobook history. All of which might be enough to make it my favorite photobook of 2019. But when that material assumes the form of a scrapbook glued to children's construction paper, I'm dumbfounded. A truly original work of art.

Relph’s surreal take on New York City pokes fun at skyscrapers, graffiti, and aspirational culture. Using a library scanning wand to photograph construction postings over a seven year period, Relph rendered a Big Apple of vertical strips sandwiched into bizarre forms. This is a document of one city's history during a time of astronomical growth, and also its imagined future. Both are twisted by Relph into clownish satire. Packed into a thick handsome softcover, his pictures are a joy to browse, and will become only more interesting with passing decades.

Springer’s promising debut collects impressions upon her return to rustic Wisconsin. Published in an era of designers pushing the envelope, Dormant Season gets back to basics with timeless monochromes, rich tones, spacious layout, and white cloth cover. All features play a supporting role for Springer’s photographs, which are strong enough to steal the show.

Berthier designed and built a yacht camouflaged in the form of vernacular rocks. He photographed the boat, then inserted its figure into found postcards. His monograph organizes the beguiling results into vertically stacked triplets. The result is a delightfully wacky book of creative whims, whose charming design is the perfect vehicle for its odd subject.

Since Masahisa Fukase’s death in 2012 we’ve seen a glut of posthumous titles, reprints, and retrospectives. Private Scenes zeroes in on the man himself, as viewed from arm’s length. Silver gelatins from his final two exhibitions tuck Fukase’s various body parts in the rearview corner, leaving most of the frames open for street life, friends, pets, and colorfully exuberant overpaintings.
