Etan & Me was selected as a Best Book by Christopher McCall. He writes, "Viviane Sassen has put together another strong book. Well edited and concise, Etan & Me explores ideas related to the self and other. Beautiful, colorful photographs of Etan are paired with fluid, abstract portraits of Sassen, which appear to be photographed via reflections on crumbled metallic paper. They create a great rhythm throughout the book, and the design and feel make it the perfect companion to Sassen's last book with Oodee, Roxane."

The Christmas Tree Bucket is a new twist on an old tale — a narrative following photographer Trent Parke's family during Christmas, woven together with images of a burning gingerbread house, nursing babies, screaming and sleeping children and parents, creepy stuffed animals, and the photographer himself vomiting into his family's Christmas tree bucket. Parke writes, "It was there — while staring into that bright red bucket, vomiting every hour on the hour for fifteen hours straight — that I started to think how strange families, suburbia, life, vomit and in particular, Christmas really was..."

Photographs by Paula McCartney and writing by Andy Sturdevant come together in Book of Trees to explore the poetry and politics of trees. Illustrated with color photographs of a woman standing in heavily wooded landscapes, sometimes with a child or cat, the viewer is given the space to ruminate upon the native and transplanted trees that comprise a landscape. This petite softbound monograph is signed and printed in an edition of only 250 copies.

One Picture Book #81 presents Supermarket by John Divola — a series of photographs of middle-aged women shopping for groceries in Divola's native San Fernando Valley, California in the early 1970s. The series provides a glimpse into Divola's forthcoming monograph, San Fernando Valley, published by Nazraeli and due out later this year. Supermarket is limited to only 500 signed and numbered copies and includes an original signed print by Divola.

Impressed by the intimate scale of small prints made from iPhone captures, Richard Misrach has created an exquisite body of work with dead desert vegetation. The photographs of the winding scrub-brush tendrils are converted to a negative and reproduced here for the 82nd book in the One Picture Book series. Limited to only 500 numbered and signed copies, iPhone Studies: Reverse Scrubs also contains an original signed photograph by Richard Misrach.

The photographs in Witness by Dan Solomon are sourced from two historical documents surrounding the assassination of JFK: the Zapruder film and Mary Moorman's Polaroid taken just a sixth of a second after the president had been fatally shot. Solomon uses stills from the film, cropping and enlarging the figures seen within. The hazy figures raise questions about the authenticity of eyewitness accounts and the limitations of the camera’s ability to capture reality as it shifts and changes outside of the frame. Witness is limited to 500 copies and includes an original signed photograph by Dan Solomon.

Jim Goldberg traveled to Haiti more than two years after the January 2010 earthquake that killed over 100,000 people and affected the lives of more than three million people in the surrounding areas. Documenting their everyday struggles, Goldberg’s Polaroids from Haiti illustrates a country's indomitable spirit thriving within the impoverished communities they call home.

This Week's Auctions

Among this week's outstanding auction listings, two of the seminal books of the Bauhaus period in one lot—both in rare dust jackets: Es Kommt der Neue Fotograf (Here Comes the New Photograph) + Filmgegner von heute, Filmfreunde von morgen (Opponents of Film Today, Movie Fans of Tomorrow) by Werner Graff and Hans Richter, respectively. Any bibliographic history of Modernism in the 20th century would be sorely lacking without them!

Also on the block, an extraordinary signed copy of New York: The New Art Scene by Ugo Mulas. Printed in inky, rich gravure, it's an incredible collection that captures both established and cutting-edge artists — Warhol and Lichtenstein, and also Duchamp and Newman, for example — not just in formal portrait sittings, but significantly in playful, candid settings that reveal the bohemian exhilaration that characterized this vibrant period. Fans of Rachel Kushner's acclaimed 2013 novel The Flamethrowers will especially appreciate it! Other listings this week include:

  • Robert Frank: Gli Americani (The Americans) — scarce first Italian edition (1958)
  • Walker Evans: Many Are Called — hardbound first edition
  • Josef Koudelka: Gypsies — first printing, signed
  • Margaret Bourke-White: Coffee Through The Camera's Lens
