NEW ARRIVALS +  09.29.12 Vol 9.39

Greetings from the NY Art Book Fair! This week I have taken a personal trip to the Big Apple to explore all of the amazing books Printed Matter’s annual event at PS1 has to offer. In the coming months I hope to be writing about some of the books I am ogling over in photo-eye’s New Arrivals Newsletter, but before I get ahead of myself, we have a few great books featured this week, too!

Latifundia by Bernhard Prinz offers an in-depth look at the artist’s extensive series of portraiture of young men and women. Looking directly at the camera and with little emotion on display, the photographer’s subjects lose individual identity, becoming objects that reflect Prinz’ own notion of youthful culture. Through his use of metaphor and frequent incorporation of sculptures in the foreground, the artist’s highly stylized photographs ask us to question the theme of human impact and individual identity. Copies are now in stock and are available for order.

Wandering through the outskirts of Middle Eastern cities in Syria, Jordan, Turkey and Iran, Oliver Hartung has created a series of photographs reflective of both a physical reality of the region, but also confront the westernized stereotype portrayed in the media. Starting the project in 2007, Hartung was drawn to photograph monuments; a definition broad enough to include brightly painted cement forms, to improvised sculptures, graffiti and collections of images and more. The photographs often depict wasteland, strewn with trash and often with signs of ruin. Nearly all the images devoid of people, it is a landscape with a gloomy cast. Through the photographer’s haunting portrayal, The Arabian Monument challenges our perceptions of the Arab world. Copies are now in stock and are available for order.

Prix Fernand Baudin 2011 is a modest but striking document of the international competition for the most beautiful books in Brussels and Wallonia. Giving recognition for book design, function and quality, Prix Fernand Baudin 2011 presents a window into deliberations at the event, with texts recording the jury debates and conversations that lead to the selection of the 2011 prizewinners. This book is not only an in-depth look at the internal workings of a prestigious award, but also a beautifully designed publication in its own right. Copies are now in stock and are available for order.

Published by Steidl, Resonances by Valerie Jouve revolves around the subject of human interaction with their environmental surroundings. Photographing street scenes and selected structures that she also uses as backdrops for portraits of individuals, Jouve's work investigates the resonance of urban places and how they are affected by human presence. Originally trained in sociology, her work navigates from villages to densely populated cities and comments on both the individual and collective experience. Copies are now in stock and are available for order.

This week we go from "La Dolce Vita" of William's Klein's Rome to the Swinging Sixties of David Bailey's iconic Box of Pin-Ups (an unusual set with all 36 prints signed by Bailey!). Much like Bailey's celebrities, swaggering poses and insouciant attitudes also define the subjects in Bruce Davidson's Brooklyn Gang; like Walker Evans' American Photographs, it has become one of the classics of American scene photography. Also on the block this week: three signed books by Lee Friedlander; Guy Bourdin's two-volume posthumous retrospective, A Message for You & MUCH MORE! Be sure to check out Eric's presentation below!
