NEW ARRIVALS +  04.14.12 Vol 9.15

Aftermath The Aftermath Project showcases the powerful work of leading journalistic and fine art photographers exploring the horrific realities of war. The latest brilliant volume, War Is Only Half the Story, Vol. 4, takes the viewer deep into the trenches of conflict. Whether it is Danny Wilcox Frazier's striking images from the Pine Ridge Reservation and the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre or the hauntingly beautiful and complex photographs from Afghanistan by Monika Bulaj, the photographs in this volume continue to open the veil on humanity's peril and unnecessary madness. Copies are now in stock and available for order.

fototaroc "fotoTaroc, also from (Jill) Hartley, is another riff on a traditional game, this time, the tarot. Here, the link is looser; instead of 78 cards, Hartley presents the viewer with 88, and unlike the traditional tarot, they are unlabeled and unnumbered. While an observer with some knowledge of the symbolism of the tarot can find some overlapping of imagery, Hartley's fotoTaroc is a game of chance and free association. Saturated color images show a variety of objects, items and scenes, each beautiful in its own right, but intriguing when paired and re-ordered; they are images open for interpretation and association." — from Sarah Bradley's post on photo-eye Blog. Copies of this limited edition are now in stock and available for order.

Evžen Sobek's series Life in Blue brings together a narrative revolving around a unique community of campers who inhabit the banks of a manmade reservoir in southern Czech Republic. This flat landscape and the curious characters who frequent it come alive with energy in Sobek's highly engaging book. Beautiful blue skies and water fill most of the photographer's frame, capturing enigmatic moments that bring significance to the enjoyment of life and recreation. Copies are now in stock and available for order.

Graphic 19: What A Beautiful Book Is: Best Book Competition explores what it is that makes a beautiful book in the modern age. This issue features the winners of the contemporary book design competitions held in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Sweden and Switzerland. Each winner is showcased along with the juror's statements, text and interviews pinpointing what makes these books special. This issue also features book spreads, covers and photographs of book fair exhibitions. Copies are arriving soon and are available for order.

Michael Max McLeod's publication series Casual Encounters explores the artist's relationship with the men he meets on sex and dating websites. After giving up on finding Mr. Right, McLeod turned to the world of online relationships, eventually allowing in those who wanted to be invited into the photographer's world. What unfolds is a unique narrative based upon sex and the desire for companionship. Copies of volumes 1-4 are now in stock and available for order.

photo-eye Auctions

This week's highlights include searing looks at two brutal instances of post-war political repression: an extraordinarily rare signed copy of Koen Wessing's Chili, September 1973, which examines the aftermath of Augusto Pinochet's coup d'etat of that year and Joesf Koudelka's Invaze 68, whose 250 images were smuggled out of Czechoslovakia following the Soviet invasion of 1968.

Also on the block, the Bill Brandt Archive's lavish publication of his complete nudes; a pristine signed copy of Lee Friedlander's The American Monument; a lovely example of Ed Van Der Elsken's stream-of-consciousness globe-trotting odyssey, Sweet Life and much more. Be sure to check out Eric Miles' presentation below!

We are now accepting consignments of fine photobooks and prints. Be sure to contact Eric Miles if you have material you'd like us to consider. See our auction F.A.Q for guidelines.
