Just arrived at our warehouse, signed copies of In This Dark Wood by Elisabeth Tonnard. Self published by Tonnard in 2008, In This Dark Wood has garnered increased attention over the last year, and was included in Jeff Ladd's picks for the Best Books of 2009. Tonnard, a Dutch artist who lives and works in the Netherlands and US, presents 90 images from the incredible Joseph Salle Fox Movie Flash archive at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York. The photographs are repetitious, variations on a theme — portraits seemingly shot in one night on a street in San Francisco. Each spread presents a photograph paired with a different English translation of the first verse of Dante's Inferno. Signed copies of this extraordinary publication are now in stock.
Arriving soon, copies of Phil Underdown's remarkable Limited Edition Grasslands. An edition of 50, Grasslands presents a body of work 5 years in the making, photographed at the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge. The land was first filled and leveled to make way for an airstrip in the 1940s which, after 50 years of use, was abandoned and the Refuge was established. Underdown's methodical exploration of the site serves as potent discourse on the broader natural landscape, both planned and wild — a natural state deformed by human presence — runways cracked by a mosaic of wild grass. One copy of this stunning limited edition is currently in stock, with more available for preorder.
