Just arrived at our warehouse Protest Photographs by Chauncey Hare, published by Steidl / Stephen Kasher Gallery and selected as one of the Best Books of 2009 by Todd Hido, Jeff Ladd, Jeff Mermelstein, John Gossage, Martin Parr and Alec Soth. Though funded by 3 Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, Hare practiced photography only briefly. In 1985, frustrated with the art world, he gave it up in favor of engineering, family therapy and activism. Protest Photographs is Hare's first publication since 1984's seminal This Was Corporate America, and is a work of sensitive compassion, insight and power. Copies now in stock.
Arriving soon, In Hokkaido by Michael Kenna, published by RAM (Japan) on the occasion of Kenna's exhibition at the Kushiro Art Museum in Hokkaido, and distributed in the US by Nazraeli. Kenna's 2006 publication Hokkaido is easily one of the most beautiful books of the last decade, and Kenna's images from the small Japanese island may be his most powerful to date. This publication contextualizes and examines Kenna's work from a Japanese perspective — a touching afterword by Daido Moriyama makes it clear that the gaze of the foreigner has been instrumental in shaping a new appreciation of Hokkaido's natural landscape, crisp and clear, covered in perfect snow. A limited quantity of copies are now available for preorder.
