An American Exodus. A Record Erosion. Photographs by Dorothea Lange. Text by Paul S. Taylor. Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1939. 158 pp. First edition. Quarto. Clothbound with gilt embossing. Library protected dust jacket. 112 black-and-white illustrations.

"Of all the photobooks stemming from the New Deal, and the FSA in particular, An American Exodus...is the most considered. Not only does it have the closest integration of text and image, but the whole book was compiled with scrupulous attention to the presentation of facts, without either hyperbole or undue rhetoric on the part of photographer or writer...Both she and Taylor seemed to have been acutely aware of piling on too much heart-wringing rhetoric. They have included just enough to make their sympathies clear, and to keep their audience engaged. This makes An American Exodus the most balanced of New Deal documentary books, and therefore a model for the genre."--from The Photobook by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger (p. 142). Also included in The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century
Item Condition
Fine in a (very rare!) Near Fine dust jacket; book is just about Very Fine, with only slight wear to corners; jacket is the best we've seen on this title; it has some edge wear and chipping (visible in illustration) but is totally intact and very well protected.
