NEW ARRIVALS +  10.06.12 Vol 9.40

parr Ici Au Loin by Pentti Sammallahti is an exquisite representation of the photographer's life as wanderer and artist. Capturing everyday life in rural farmlands, village streets or breathtaking mountain vistas, Sammallahti's images take the viewer through an often surreal journey of atmospheric quality, propelling us to think deeper about the human condition and the land we inhabit. Ici Au Loin is an extensive collection of beautifully reproduced images presented in an appropriately designed book. Copies are now in stock and are available for order.

Mushrooms from the Forest 2011 is a playful journey deep into the woods in search of a variety of mushrooms and fungi. Homma leads us through the dense forest, focusing at once on the overall landscape. Curiously, the photographer extracts the mushrooms he finds to photograph them against a plain white backdrop, forcing the viewer to study the specimens closely and allowing for a separate backdrop to ponder each species. These beautiful photographs are contained in a modest, but seemingly delicate softbound edition. Copies are now in stock and are available for order.

Published by Steidl, The Keys to the House by Juergen Teller is a telling portrait of the photographer's personal life. Landscapes, interiors and intimate portraits of family and friends — taken around the photographer's private home — are combined with images of models that often find their way into Teller's personal world. The photographs at first seem to be casual snapshots, but upon closer viewing, Teller has created and intricate visual diary only a photographic master could conceive. Copies are now in stock and are available for order.

New from Axle Contemporary, E Pluribus Unum is a documentation of the art collective's 10-day city-wide portraiture project taken throughout Santa Fe, New Mexico. Driving around in their mobile gallery, Axle created a studio and invited residents in for a free portrait session that culminated in a total of 566 participants — the final image being a composite portrait of all participants that graces the cover of this creative new book. Copies are now in stock and are available for order.

We hope you enjoy this week's selection of New Arrivals!

Taking a cue from Ed Van Der Elsken and William Klein, Victor Palla and Costa Martins' Lisboa. Cidade Triste e Alegre. (Lisbon: Sad and Happy City) is a book object imbued with the unbridled kinetic energy of the city. It's an incomparable example of mid-century book design with images shot by two architects who are as interested in urban spaces and built environment as they are in the poetry of everyday life. Brilliant!

Also 'on the block': Andrew Roth's The Book of 101 Books (in its limited edition; plus, another 1950's city book, Belleville Ménilmontant by Willy Ronis; the first edition of Dirk Alvermann's searing indictment of French colonialism in Algeria, Algerien (First Edition!!) ; Dorothea Lange & Paul Taylor's Depression Era classic American Exodus & MUCH MORE. Check out Eric's presentation below where he discusses a few of this week's offerings.
