NEW ARRIVALS +  03.25.12 Vol 9.12

house of coates House of Coates, a new collaborative effort by Alec Soth and Brad Zellar, continues piecing together the reclusive story of Lester B. Morrison. Alongside Zellar's written text that form fragments of contradictory encounters with Morrison are snapshot images taken from multiple disposable Kodak cameras by Morrison himself. This series is about running away and the psychology associated with such behavior. House of Coates is an entertaining and curious contradiction that continues to give the viewer insight into a mysterious figure that holds a puzzling relationship with Alec Soth. Copies are in stock and available for order.

braeckman The self-titled Dirk Braeckman contains the photographer's ambiguous and stylized series of haunting interiors and mysterious portraits. Braeckman's use of an unusually dark color palate translates his work to something more gestural than traditionally photographic, as if the photographer is using a watercolorist's technique on photographic paper. Motion and deep blacks blend together creating a nuanced atmosphere that leans towards an obscure narrative. Copies are in stock and available for order.

Burning Chrome by Norihisa Hosaka takes the viewer on a vibrant journey through the city streets of Tokyo at night. Long exposures and brilliant tonal ranges express an artificial beauty highlighted with the photographer's use of HDR technology. The highly glossy paper and rich blacks also offer a brilliance that is reminiscent of illumination. Signed copies in stock and available for order.

Time and Space on the Lower East by Brian Rose and Ed Fausty is a stunning collaboration of photographs taken in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. This project began in 1980 depicting crumbling buildings and an expressive resilience of the people who lived among them. These photographs sat in Rose's archive unseen for nearly three decades. Rose came back to the Lower East Side in 2010 to once again photograph the old neighborhoods with fresh eyes and a new perspective. Here the viewer is shown a series that looks both backward and forward and expresses a continuation of rebirth. Copies are arriving soon and are available for preorder.
