NEW ARRIVALS +  10.08.11 Vol 8.41

Summertime Summertime by Mark Steinmetz is a journey into an endless youthful summer. The photographs in this book — taken between 1984 and 1991 — are reminiscent of a time of less parental supervision and fewer distractions caused by the digital era. Steinmetz's investigation of summertime pursuits is both an enrapturing encounter with adolescent adventure, as well as a nostalgic look at the long summer days of childhood. Beautifully printed with Nazraeli's "Daido black" ink, the black-and-white the images in this book feel timeless and give a glimpse of the beauty of imagination and freedom. Signed copies are arriving soon and are available for preorder.

The Unseen Eye The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious contains 370 images from the exquisite and often surreal collection of W. M. Hunt. Hunt — a renowned collector and curator — has assembled a peculiar and compelling collection of photographs and illustrations that focus on a central theme: in each image, the subject's gaze is always averted. Whether it is with downcast eyes, an obstructed view or the creation of artistic intent, these images question the viewer's notion of traditional portraiture. Compiled in book form and paired with Hunt's periodic and insightful commentary, this collection manages to create a dream-like sequence that flows naturally, evoking unconscious emotions that create a dialogue between the cycle of life, desire and despair as well as the conventional and infinite. Copies are arriving soon and available for preorder.

The Crooked Path The Crooked Path by Jeff Wall is an insightful investigation into both the importance of this prolific photographer's work and the visionaries that have influenced his career. In this book, Wall has chosen 25 of his own images — spanning his entire career — and mixed them alongside the work of artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Diane Arbus, Robert Smithson, among many others. Including 10 interviews to coincide with each of the books chapters, The Crooked Path is a collection of images and influences that bring forth personal insight from a photographer who has himself influenced so many. Copies are arriving soon and are available for preorder.

Lynn Valley 6 — a collaboration between Roe Ethridge and Cheyney Thompson — offers a unique juxtaposition that matches Thompson's abstract paintings with outtakes from Ethridge's commercial photography work. While appearing as a chaotic mix of two diverse artistic practices, the book manages to create an inspiring dialogue, highlighting each artist's creative process and eclectic subject matter. In addition, the book includes glimpses of the artists' studios, notebook sketches, collages and color charts. Copies are arriving soon and are available for preorder.

Colstrip, Montana, the title and subject of David T. Hanson's recent monograph, is an eye-opening view of the city's mine, power plant and industrial site located in Big Sky Country. While the images here were first exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art in 1986 by then curator John Szarkowski, this book is the first collection featuring the entire series. Offering a mix of mesmerizing aerials, portraits of industrial monstrosities and foreboding landscapes, Colstrip, Montana challenges the viewer's notion of how Americans not only use the land we live on, but also how we treat it. Signed copies are arriving soon and are available for preorder. Read Sara Terry’s review of Colstrip, Montana in photo-eye Magazine.

A limited number of David T. Hanson's now out-of-print monograph Waste Land are still available.

photo-eye's Publisher Direct

This week on photo-eye's Publisher Direct we have four new superb titles.

Leafsmoke by Kay J. Denton evokes a surreal and intimate sense of an external and internal environment. The images in this book capture an everyday world whose inhabitants appear timeless and clearly have a deep kinship with their surroundings. Creating an ambiance of child-like wonder, Denton leads the viewer through a dream-like world that beckons contemplation of the one’s own personal environment, begging us to reconsider our own understanding of place.

Undisclosed by Bertil Nilsson is a stunning interpretation of the artistic expression exhibited by circus performers. Focusing on the physicality of the performer's training, Nilsson's photographs display a thoughtful understanding of the dedication of this often overlooked and under-appreciated craft. The performers here always appear nude, sharpening the photographer's focus on the sculptural form and graceful beauty of the men and women presented in this monograph. Exceptionally printed, Undisclosed takes us into a world many have yet to see.

Sea of Lanterns by Ewa Monika Zebrowski and Anne Michaels is an intriguing collaboration between photographer and writer. Paired alongside Michael's poetic text, Zebrowski's images capture a ghostly atmosphere, creating a duet between the artists that evokes a journey on the line between the conscious and subconscious. Limited to an edition of 20 artist books, Sea of Lanterns consists of 27 small books that vary in design and content. The 27 folios in this collection can be viewed at random, allowing the viewer to engage with the artists' story in their own preference.

Also by Ewa Monika Zebrowski, END OF BEAUTY is delicate artist book that awakens a sense of thoughtful contemplation. The photographs here — all taken in the same room — display a quiet ambiance with each individual image exhibiting a powerful presence. There is an illusive emptiness within the spaces of Zebrowski's photographs, creating a mysterious environment that forces the viewer to engage with the space carefully. Combining text within the accordion fold design and limited to an edition of 20 copies, END OF BEAUTY is a precious and subtle object.
