NEW ARRIVALS +  08.13.10 Vol 7.33

Destroy This Memory Just arrived this week, Destroy This Memory a new monograph from the legendary Richard Misrach, published by the Aperture Foundation in New York. Destroy This Memory presents photographs Misrach shot of post-Katrina graffiti in New Orleans with a pocket digital camera, while there to work on an extensive body of large format photographs. The book is published without essay, text or page numbers — from the title of the book forward, the only text which appears is that scrawled by affected residents, relief workers and civil servants on the iconic landscape of the devastated city. The stripped down format is direct, providing a powerful and elegant perspective on Misrach's career-long interest in human intervention and the natural world. Copies now in stock.

Julia Margaret Cameron * Roger Fenton Another new arrival this week is Julia Margaret Cameron / Roger Fenton: Early British Photographs from the Royal Collection, edited and with text by Sophie Gordon. Cameron and Fenton are certainly two of the most interesting British pioneers of the photographic art, the work of each seem to be almost prescient precursors to vast sections of modern day photography. Julia Margaret Cameron took up photography in middle age, and practiced for only 11 years — her portraits are close, personal images with little of the stoic formality almost universal at the time. Roger Fenton was a lawyer turned painter turned photographer who founded the Royal Photographic Society and became one of the world's first war photographers, when sent to the Crimean by Prince Albert in 1855. While neither were particularly well regarded in their own time, they've since been justly recognized for their startling, beautiful contributions to the art. Copies now in stock.
