"Animalerie" is FRENCH for "animal shop." For three years between 1991-94, American photographer Jayne Hinds Bidaut sought out pet shops in Europe and North America, quietly witnessing and photographing what she saw. Her meditative, sometimes haunting photographs are beautiful works of art and powerful statements. Bidaut's images of cats and dogs, lizards and snakes, birds, fish, and mice evoke in the viewer an amazing range of emotions, from wonder at the innocence of these small lives to anxiety and foreboding at their caged condition. They draw us into the unsuspected place within the familiar and compel us to experience the depths and ambiguities beneath the surface of everyday life.
JAYNE HINDS BIDAUT is a native Texan. Her inventive photography has been exhibited throughout the world and has been acquired by numerous prestigious institutions. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, as well as many others. She is best known in the art world for rediscovering and successfully bringing the long outmoded ferrotyping process into the previous arena. This is her second book; her previous is Jayne Hinds Bidaut: Tintypes. She lives and works in New York City.
Titled after the French word for “pet shop,” Jayne Hinds Bidaut's moving series of ferrotype photographs pays homage to a variety of animals, both ordinary and curious, in American and European pet shops. Lizards, snakes, birds, fish, mice, pigs, and dogs peer back at the viewer, conveying a sense of both connection and isolation. Bidaut’s lyric eye and the medium's soft quality give voice to the smaller dramas of these animals’lives and daily routines. Bidaut expertly captures the edges of the animal's caged environments, including the blurred edges of the wire cage, subtle reflections in the glass, words written on the outside of the container as graphic elements, but never allowing them to dominate what the creature offers the viewer. The resulting images are sophisticatedly layered with meaning and moving at the same time. This book touches ever so lightly on the ethics of the caged condition and commodification of the animals, but ultimately resonates with a sense wonderment and empathy.
