Book of the Week: A Pick by Jeffrey Ladd
Sergio Larrain

"Having been a self-proclaimed Sergio Larrain junkie for long while, I heard about and waited patiently for this book’s release date. I wondered if there would be images that haven’t been published before. I didn’t realize that 1/2 the book would be of images new to me - and the best part is, much of it is even better than the work I had known."
— Jeffrey Ladd

New Arrivals

Life and Still Life is the first in an on-going series of books on Sam Abell's rich photographic life. Organized geographically, Life and Still Life features 140 color illustrations from Newfoundland, Hagi, Japan, and Northern Australia, and is housed in a slipcase with a segment of one of Abell's photographs printed on the outside spine. The remaining portions of the image will be printed on future volumes to create one complete plate and, with over 16 volumes of photographs, a comprehensive retrospective of this legend of photography. Signed copies are expected in November, but unsigned copies are currently in stock.

The photographs of Emmet Gowin are a touchstone in contemporary American photography. After his marriage to his wife and muse Edith in 1964, Gowin began making intimate portraits of her, their children and aging parents. In the 1980s his work took a different turn as he began photographing natural landscapes that had been marred by mankind including mines, irrigation and military testing sites. This new monograph looks at his expansive body of work that weaves together the personal and universal themes. Emmet Gowin celebrates the remarkable career of one of the most notable American photographers of the 20th century.

The Green Fuse by Patricia Galagan documents the aftermath of the 2011 Las Conchas fire in Northern New Mexico that burned over 150,000 acres — the second largest fire recorded in the state's history. Photographing the burn scar, Galagan focuses on the emergent plant life adapting to the new landscape after the fire. The black & white photographs employ subtle use of the color green to mark the new plant life.

Back-In-Stock

The Photograph as Contemporary Art by Melinda Gibson is a fascinating interpretation at the original book of the same name written by Charlotte Cotton. Gibson appropriates content from the original book, removing, editing and arranging it in new ways. Gibson's re-configurations critique the original topics in the book such as the wide range of photographic working practices from documentary to fine art as well as the ubiquitous dissemination of photographs in the twenty-first century.

Darkened Days is a melancholic visual exploration of photographer Simone Kappeler's native Switzerland and abroad. Kappeler's arresting black & white photographs allude to the passage of time, loss and death. Her atmospheric compositions illustrate the moods of the people she encounters and the landscapes in which she finds herself, emanating a strong emotional intensity, linked to a particular time and place.

Thomas Jefferson's Paris Walks by Michael Kenna contains forty-six photographs illustrating the five years Jefferson spent in Paris and his walks in the great city. The collection is beautifully produced and printed to accentuate the rich tonality of Kenna's photographs. Thomas Jefferson's Paris Walks is limited to 400 copies, each signed and number by the artist.
