NEW ARRIVALS +  01.21.11 Vol 8.4

Los Angeles Just arrived at our warehouse, Ed Ruscha's Los Angeles published by MIT Press in Cambridge and written by Alexandra Schwartz, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Montclair Art Museum. In this seminal exploration of Ed Ruscha's work, Schwartz contextualizes the artists groundbreaking work of the 1960s and 70s amidst the wider social and cultural upheavals of Los Angeles, and his relationships with fellow Ferus Gallery artists including John Altoon, Ed Kienholz, Billy Al Bengston and Dennis Hopper. Previously, Schwartz edited the phenomenal collection of Ruscha's writings and interviews, Leave Any Information At The Signal (MIT press, 2004) and now presents the first comprehensive critical text on his work. Copies of this remarkable volume are now in stock and available to order.

Also just arrived, copies of Speaker Receiver by Moyra Davey, published by Sternberg Press on the occasion of Davey's 2010 exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland and selected as one of the Best Books of 2010 by photographer Michael Schmelling. Among multi-disciplinary artists, Moyra Davey has a rare acumen for gracefully synthesizing her chosen media of photography, installation and video through a kind of meta-deconstructive style of reading and writing, or as Michael Schmelling puts it "writing about writing about photography." Here, a multitude of different projects are presented as a musing tour, guided by graceful texts and bounding insights. Copies of this intriguing monograph are now in stock and available for order.

Now in stock, La Residence by Swedish photographer JH Engstrom, a stunning book showcasing the artist's ability to building deep relationships with everyday encounters. Arranged by the Contretype Photo Center, Engstrom was awarded a grant for two separate stays in Brussels, where these photographs originated. The objective of the artist's sojourn was for Engstrom to analyze his own creative development while creating a specific view of the city. The result of Engstrom's efforts came forth in a beautifully printed journal that weaves subtle commentary with street scenes of the city and intimate portraits of Brussels' residence. The production quality of La Residence is apparent, not only in the printing quality, but in the numerous gatefolds highlighting a series of portraits and still-lifes of everyday occurrences. Copies are now in stock and available for order!

Also of note, Polaroid Work by Bjorn Sterri is a personal glimpse into the artist's world. Filled with beautiful and often surreal photographs, Polaroid Work is an engagement into a deeply connected family. Sterri, a seemingly ever present father, took an enormous amount of Polaroids documenting his close relationship to his wife and two boys – a task that many photographers take on. In Sterri's work, however, there is a unique quality that combines compassion and love with original intimacy. Copies are now in stock and available for order.
